Chapter 11
Layla couldnât get clean. Sheâd drowned in the looks and whispers all day long. Martine was good at her job but nobody wanted to hear the truth when the lies were so much juicier. Even a scalding hot shower hadnât helped. She still felt like the gum somebody had scraped off their shoe. One thing had become blatantly clear; Russ was adored at his job. He was more popular than she was.
Her only saving grace was the fact that her parents obviously hadnât seen the article yet. Sheâd broken her radio silence to send a single text to her mother before shutting off her phone for the night. BUSY AT WORK. SEE YOU FOR SUPPER ON SUNDAY. LOVE, LAYLAY. That would get her off the hook for tomorrow and then sheâd ignore everything else till Sunday because they were certain to have heard the rumors by then. Of course, it also meant she had to show up for supper on Sunday. Lose some, lose some.
She could have died. He showed up with a bouquet of lilies and a box of fruit jellies. Not roses and not chocolates. How long had he been paying attention? Layla shook her head. She didnât want to know. She didnât know what game he was playing but she knew her luck with him had run out. Experience had taught her it didnât hurt as much to leave the game when she left the table early. After a lifetime of losing, sheâd become a quick learner.
âCan I help you?â she asked, barring the way with one hand on the door frame and one just above the deadbolt.
Russâ grin faltered. âCan I come in so we can talk?â
âWas there something you needed?â
âYeah.â Then he stopped talking. Layla had to admit that it was an effective trick since she wasnât about to have a conversation with him in the corridor. Reluctantly she stepped aside and he slipped between her and the doorframe. Her grip on the door tightened when he brushed his hand across her cheek as he passed.
He set the flowers and candy on the breakfast bar and then took off his jacket and dumped it on a stool. He seemed to be making himself at home. It looked pretty good on him too. Damn him. Sheâd gotten used to having him around after less than a week.
âWhat was it you needed?â she asked.
Russ carefully lowered himself onto the center sofa cushion. âI need you to accept my apology. Two of them, actually.â
Layla felt confusion draw her eyebrows together. âYou havenât done anything that needs an apology.â
He leaned forward, elbows on his knees. âI pushed at the restaurant. I shouldnât have. You asked me not to and I should have respected your boundaries. Iâm sorry.â
Hot damn. A straight-out apology for fucking up. It was impressive. It didnât change anything but it was impressive. âItâs okay.â
âItâs really not. Because after acting like an ass I doubled-down and ignored you instead of manning up. Iâm sorry for that too.
